NINE

“Sister Eloise, I presume?”

Eloise opened her eyes slowly. A throbbing sensation in the back of her skull sent agonising waves of torment cascading through her body, burning along her nerves, her eyeballs pulsating as if they might just burst out of their sockets.

The man standing over her had a familiar face. It took her brain just a fraction of a second to recognise him to be the man they had come to kill – Nate Robinson. Looking at him closer now, Eloise found him to be entirely distinctive; his face was long and slender, his chin sharp, the bridge of his nose razor thin. He reminded Eloise of a rat; not that she’d ever tell him that, she knew he might not take too kindly to the comparison.

As always seemed to be the case, he was wearing his sunglasses.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” he said, smiling, showing off his pointed, narrow teeth, the front two protruding further than the rest (once again, very much rat-like). “You know – a lot of my associates would be very eager to meet you, if I were to tell them I had you here. You’ve caused a lot of trouble these past few years.” He was surprisingly well spoken.

Eloise looked around her. She was still inside ‘Electronica’. She had been tied to a chair – her arms pulled tight around the back, her wrists bound with some kind of rope – and positioned in the centre of the dancefloor. Nate was standing before her, while three other man waited at the bar. Two of them were the bouncers she’d seen outside earlier. The other man was clearly a bouncer also; they all wore the same attire – black trousers, white shirt, black tie.

But Eloise didn’t care about any of those people; more concerning to her was the fact that Sophia was nowhere to be seen. “Where…” muttered Eloise, her throat on fire. She took a breath, and swallowed a ball of phlegm. “Where is she?”

“Where’s who?” shrugged Nate, acting as if he didn’t know who she was talking about. He knew damn-well who she was talking about.

“Sophia. Where is she?”

“The girl? Oh – don’t you worry about her. She’s in safe hands.”

“WHERE IS SHE?” Eloise snarled. She could feel her blood boiling. A fury gripped her heart, squeezing it into submission. She pulled at her restraints. The rope that bound her wrists had been threaded through the wooden slats that made up the back of the chair, leaving her with little chance of escape.

Nate gritted his teeth. He lifted his foot and kicked Eloise square in the chest. She felt her ribcage compress under the force of the blow. Knocked back, the chair tilted then fell, dropping Eloise painfully to the floor, her arms crushed under the weight of her own body, her vertebra screaming in agony, the wind knocked from her sails.

Nate straddled her, grabbing her chin, squeezing so hard that Eloise thought his fingertips might dig through the flesh of her cheeks.
